Vijah Ramjattan is the Founder & President of the United Madrassi Association Inc. (UMA), an organization committed to bringing about unity within the Madrassi diaspora and across other community groups and organizations in New York City. His areas of interest are in youth development; fostering female empowerment and creating a platform for the younger generation to develop a sense of belonging where they can build identity through effective community service.
Vijah leads a number of community service events such as Annapurna Amma Day – where the community comes together and feed and clothe the hungry and homeless living in the streets and shelters; Dharti Amma Day – where devotees and volunteers join to clean the waterways polluted by worshippers; Elderly Nursing Home Kirtan-where his Kirtan group sings for the elderly at the nursing homes; Monthly Community Havans , Annual Madrassi Day Parade where the community displays it’s rich culture and much more.
Vijah also serves as the Chairman of the New York City Brooklyn Youth Council Corporation; PTA Treasurer, Title 1 District Representative and School Leadership Team Member at Public School 121, NYC. He is a graduate from Hunter College with Bachelor of Arts degrees in Psychology and Comparative Religion. Professionally, Vijah works for the New York State Psychiatric Institute, Colombia University as a Research Study Field Director.
